Assisted Dying, Social Work, and Human Rights - What does assisted dying legislation mean for social work?
Join us on Human Rights Day to hear about the assisted dying legislation currently in Westminster and Holyrood, and how social work and human rights would be integral to any assisted dying scheme. The proposed legislation has important implications for adult safeguarding and mental capacity.
BASW’s Director of Policy and Research, Public Affairs and Professional Learning, Dr Luke Geoghegan, recently spoke at a House of Lords committee scrutinising the Bill and the full evidence session is available to watch on UK Parliament TV here - https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c496a8b7-a7c2-4eff-a26f-51094f9bc…
The Westminster legislation for England and Wales creates panels consisting of a social worker, psychiatrist and senior lawyer to review requests for assisted dying. The Scottish legislation has no such panels proposed, but mental capacity would still be core to accessing an assisted death in Scotland.
This session will cover what is being proposed in the legislation, the role of social workers in the proposals, the social work conscience clause, mental capacity and safeguarding in an assisted dying framework and will consist of a series of presentations followed by Q & A.
This session will count towards your CPD.
Speakers: Dr Luke Geoghegan, Director of Policy, Research, Public Affairs and Professional Learning, BASW Kerri Prince, Public and Political Affairs Lead, BASW George Hannah, Communications & Public Affairs Officer, SASW
