This is an opportunity for members to join BASW Council members and members of the executive leadership team to hear about BASW’s aspirations, operations, and future strategy. This is also an opportunity for members with any concerns or queries regarding the changes at BASW over recent months to ask any questions too.
This training course to help social workers better understand the trials and tribulations of stepfamilies. The course is aimed at exploring the key differences, thinking about how and why stepchildren are harmed and what social workers can do to support these families. Offering insights into spotting early warning signs to prevent abuse, neglect and child deaths.
Research findings and practice experience provide compelling evidence that animal abuse in the context of domestic abuse is a tactic of coercive control and an act of animal cruelty (Arkow, 2014; Barrett et al, 2017; DeGue et al, 2009; Fitzgerald et al, 2019; Newberry, 2017; Richards, 2009, Wakeham, 2025). Although the link between domestic abuse and animal abuse is uncontested, it is an issue that is often not translated into practice.

These Community of Practice sessions are designed to be dedicated reflective places for practicing MHOs across Scotland to network with peers and engage in reflective discussion on prearranged topics to support professional learning and development. There will be a CoP for MHOs planned on a quarterly basis and each CoP will have a dedicated theme. The CoPs will attract 3 hours CPD. Please book below and come and join us. You will receive an agenda and some reading prior to the session, which will be used to inform the discussion. The session will take place on MS Teams.

This one-day programme is designed as a peer learning experience and refresher, providing detailed case law/practice updates and a reflective space to support those working in-depth with MCA and DoLS processes, BIA colleagues in practice, authorisers, and mental health assessors to explore these current issues in practice.
This training session is for social care practitioners working with children and young people to upskill themselves in terms of approaching complex trauma in young people.
The session will include sections relating to: • Defining trauma • Recognising symptoms, behaviours and trauma responses • Understanding childhood trauma and its impact • Links between sensory processing and trauma • Trauma informed approaches – relational practices and strategies • Communication techniques with young people experiencing complex trauma
