- Cross-Party Groups (CPGs)
A Senedd Cross-Party Group is a forum where Members of the Senedd (MSs), from at least three different political parties, come together to discuss shared interests in a specific subject relevant to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament). These groups are not formal Senedd bodies, meaning they are not part of official Senedd proceedings, are not bound by the Senedd’s Standing Orders, and lack the powers of Senedd committees (e.g., they cannot summon witnesses or use the Senedd’s logo). Their purpose is to facilitate dialogue between MSs, external organisations, and stakeholders on topics like social care, health, education, or social issues, often involving outside speakers to inform discussions.
Each group must have a Chair (an MS) and a Secretary (who can be an MS, staff, or an external individual), elected typically at an inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM). They must adhere to formal rules set by the Senedd, ensuring transparency and requiring annual reports. Groups can include non-MS members, such as representatives from relevant organisations, and cover diverse areas like poverty, disability, or international relations, but they do not directly influence policy development.
You can view the Rules for the operation of Cross-Party Groups online (last updated May 2023).
BASW Cymru is a member of various CPGs, which are listed below, as are the BASW Cymru staff member who attends the meetings. If you are interested in a particular CPG and feel you could contribute to it, please email steven.crane-jenkins@basw.co.uk for more information.
